In Memory of Carlton Fairweather – Supporting St Benedict’s Hospice

The Fans Museum, in conjunction with Sunderland AFC are aiming to raise £5,000 in support of St Benedict’s Hospice in Sunderland

Carlton Fairweather was a former professional footballer who spent the majority of his playing career at Wimbledon as part of the famous “Crazy Gang”. He also represented several other clubs, including Dulwich Hamlet, Bromley, Tooting & Mitcham United, and Carlisle United.

Following his retirement from playing, Carlton dedicated himself to coaching, holding a number of important roles within football. These included various positions at Sunderland AFC, most notably as Head Coach of SAFC Women.

Carlton sadly passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2025. Through this fundraising effort, we aim to honour his memory and support St Benedict’s Hospice in gratitude for their exceptional care, compassion and support they provided to Carlton and his family during his illness

We have commissioned Bob Olley, a renowned North East artist, to create a bespoke piece of artwork in honour of Carlton. This commemorative piece will be presented to each of Carlton’s former clubs as a lasting memorial.

Michael Ganley, Founder of The Fans Museum, said:

“I have long admired Bob Olley’s work, particularly the way it captures and celebrates the region’s rich industrial heritage. To me, that heritage underpins the very foundations of our beautiful game. Being involved in creating a lasting tribute to Carlton, while incorporating the legacy of such an exceptional artist, is something I am immensely proud of.”

John Hewitson, Coach and Player Developer at Sunderland AFC, alongside friends, will be taking part in the Great North Run this September to raise funds for St Benedict’s Hospice.
