The Brian Mitton Walk at The Fans Museum

Sunderland has never just been a football team to me; it’s been part of my life.
By Ross Mitton.
“Growing up, it was something I shared with my dad. Matchdays weren’t just about the game; they were about time together. The routine, the excitement, the conversations, those are the things that stay with you. Sunderland became part of us, part of our relationship, and part of who I am.
Losing my dad changed everything, but it never took that away. If anything, it made those memories mean even more. Every time I think about Sunderland, I think about him, about the moments we shared and the bond we had through the club. In the crowd, in the songs, in those moments where everything else fades away, I’m right back there with him.
That’s a big part of why I’m doing the 28-mile walk from Sedgefield to Sunderland to raise money for St Cuthbert’s Hospice. It’s not just about the distance; it’s about doing something in his memory, something that means something. Carrying him with me, step by step.
Sunderland has always been there, in the good times and the hardest ones. It’s been a connection to my past, to my dad, and now to my own family too.
Sunderland isn’t just part of my story.
It’s where I keep him.”
We were proud to welcome Ross Mitton and his group of friends to The Fans Museum this Sunday ahead of the Sunderland v Spurs game.
Ross and the group took on an incredible challenge – walking 28 miles from Sedgefield to Sunderland in loving memory of his Dad Brian who was a huge Sunderland fan. His journey finished at The Fans Museum. We are incredibly proud to have been involved in this amazing accomplishment.
The walk was in support of St Cuthbert’s Hospice, who provided outstanding care, compassion and dignity to Brian in his final days.
